Private Dwellings: Requirements from 1 January 2027
Here’s what you need to know for existing private homes, townhouses, and units:
- Photoelectric Interconnected Smoke Alarms: These must be installed, and they need to be hardwired (e.g., 240v) or equipped with a non-removable 10-year battery-powered type alarm.
- Legislation-Defined Installation Locations:
- On Each Storey: Protect every level of your home.
- In Each Bedroom: Each sleeping area needs its own alarm.
- In Hallways Connecting Bedrooms: Ensuring swift alerts throughout the home.
- If There’s No Hallway: Place alarms between bedrooms and other parts of that storey.
- If No Bedrooms on a Storey: At least one alarm must be in the most likely exit path.
